Kosteniuk - new Women Champion
Ms Kosteniuk’s performance was impressive as she had to overcome several of her main rivals on the way to the title.However, for the last twenty years or so this competition has always been the search for the second or third best female player as the Polgar sisters have ignored it. Currently Judit Polgar is in another league from any other female player.
From the UK Telegraph Of course, it would be hard to imagine Judit taking part in such an event. For one thing the knockout system of 2 games is hardly ideal. It just encourages too much randomness and the sudden death elements requires a whole different set of skills in quick play. Still it is an admirable feat for Kosteniuk having missed her chance narrowly last year when she finished runners up. Also commendable was Hou Yifan’s advance to the finals and showing real talent. Next year she will be a force to be reckoned with. If she wins the world championship at age 15, I think that would be a world’s record for any female in any sports!
